The Kansas City Royals have plenty to sort out after a 69-93 season, but Bobby Witt Jr. gave the club a reason for optimism. His MVP finalist selection adds an early offseason storyline to Kansas sports betting coverage as 2027 World Series futures begin to take shape.
Witt Joins Alvarez and Caminero as AL MVP Finalist
MLB named Witt, Houston's Yordan Alvarez and Tampa Bay's Junior Caminero as the AL finalists, and the winner will be revealed Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. CT on MLB Network. Witt is the only Royals player up for a BBWAA award this year.
He has been close before. Witt finished second to Aaron Judge in 2024 and fourth in 2025, making this his third straight top-five finish. A win would make him the second Royals MVP, joining George Brett in 1980. The odds say that is unlikely, with Alvarez the heavy favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook Kansas (-6000) and Caminero next at +1300.
Why Witt Is in the MVP Conversation
The case rests on all-around value more than power. Witt hit .281 with a .359 on-base percentage and .441 slugging, adding 18 home runs, 33 doubles, 94 runs scored and 54 RBI in 143 games. That is a step down from the 32 homers and 109 RBI he posted in 2024, but he drew a career-high 67 walks.
He stole 45 bases, second in the AL behind Chandler Simpson's 46, and has now swiped at least 30 in five straight seasons. On defense, Statcast credits him with 24 outs above average, the most of any MLB shortstop. FanGraphs put his WAR at 7.0, the best mark in the AL and second in the majors behind Pete Crow-Armstrong's 10.6.
What Comes Next for Witt and the Royals
Whether or not Witt takes home the award, the Royals face a long climb after finishing 69-93 and 16 games behind Cleveland. It will take a busy offseason to turn things around, but Witt remains a cornerstone the franchise can build around. His third straight top-five MVP finish gives Kansas City something positive to carry into 2027.
Royals World Series Odds for 2027
None of that was enough to lift Kansas City out of fifth place in the AL Central, 16 games behind division champion Cleveland. The latest Kansas City Royals odds at DraftKings list them at +9000 to win the 2027 World Series, which implies about a 1.1% chance. Their American League pennant and AL Central odds are off the board.
