After a disappointing 5-7 campaign that snapped the school’s two-year bowl streak under head coach Lance Leipold, the goal for the Kansas football team in 2025 is to get back to .500 or better. The program in Lawrence is out to prove that 2024 was a fluke.
This year, the win total for the Kansas Jayhawks for the 2025 college football season is 7.5, as of May 7 (at +110 odds on the over).
Situation | Number of Teams | Percentage |
Under 7.5 Wins | 14 of 26 | 53.8% |
Over 7.5 Wins | 12 of 26 | 46.2% |
College Football Playoff Appearance | 1 of 26 | 3.8% |
Year-End CFP Playoff Top 25 Team | 4 of 26 | 15.4% |
BetKansas.com used 2024 over/under totals from FanDuel Kansas Sportsbook coming out of spring football last year for this story.
Of the 26 teams that started the CFB season with a win total over/under of 7.5 last year at FanDuel, 12 of them (or 46.2%) cleared the over while 14 (or 53.8%) won six games or fewer. Of the 26 teams surveyed for this story, four (or 15.4%) wound up in the CFP final top 25 rankings, including No. 10 SMU, No. 18 Iowa State, No. 21 Syracuse and No. 24 UNLV.
Of those four, the Mustangs made the CFP with an at-large bid out of the ACC. SMU finished 11-2 during the school’s first season in the expanded conference and reached the conference championship game before falling to Clemson, 34-31.
This fall, Jayhawks backers for Kansas sports betting and KU fans will hope that Leipold’s bunch will avoid the early season gridiron pitfalls that ultimately tanked the season in 2024. The Jayhawks lost five straight against Illinois, UNLV, West Virginia, TCU and Arizona State by a combined total of 28 points.
To do that, they’ll have to start the season on the right foot against non-conference foes like Fresno State, Wagner and Missouri, who KU plays in Columbia in Week 3, before entering Big 12 play against West Virginia in Lawrence on Sept. 20.
With the right mixture of good play and good fortune, Leipold’s bunch can follow the script laid out by fellow FBS programs like SMU and Iowa State, who started with an over/under of 7.5 and soared to new heights at season’s end.
The road to redemption begins in earnest Aug. 23, when KU hosts Fresno State in the opener with an eye towards putting last year’s 5-7 campaign in the past and turning the page on a brighter future in Lawrence.
