Barbie vs. Oppenheimer: Which Will Come Out On Top in Kansas?

Fact Checked by Michael Peters

Now that Americans feel more and more comfortable returning to their pre-pandemic comforts like hitting the local cinema, there’s no shortage of interest in this year’s summer blockbusters.

Chief among them this summer are Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which both release in theaters July 21. There’s been a lot of buzz around the films — with some people even preparing to see both as part of a self-curated double feature.

BetKansas.com took a break from Kansas sports betting coverage and used Google Trends to calculate the relative search volume for the queries “Barbie movie” and “Oppenheimer movie” in each state.

After completing the trends for July 1, 2023 through July 17, 2023, BetKansas.com determined which film audiences in each state were most interested in seeing.

The Sunflower State has some of the highest search volume interest in both blockbusters, with a volume score of 58 for Barbie and 11 for Oppenheimer.

In the BetKansas.com survey, the Barbie search volume was largest in Tennessee (71), North Carolina and Oklahoma (67 apiece), Virginia (66), New York (65) and Alabama (63).

Oppenheimer did the best in Tennessee and New York (tied at 14), followed by Virginia (13) and Massachusetts (12).

So it seems like plenty of state residents will be pulling away from Kansas sports betting apps to hit the movie theaters soon.
